Sam walked into the voodoo shop and looked around for Mr. Saturday

Saturday is sitting behind the counter sewing a small doll with blonde hair and chips of blue glass for eyes. He mutters quietly and spits on the ground occasionally. He looks up as the door chines.

"Well well, dey man hisself is back."

He gestures with a needle to the stool at the end of the counter.

"Have seat."

Sam nodded and sat down.

Saturday nods and gestures to a shelf. The wind randomly catches an old photo and whisk it to settle before Sam.

"De spirits on both sides say she gone. Dey not too specific, but de air be final."

He nodded grimly and caught the picture "Thank you. Would you care to begin your lesson ?"

Saturday nods, looking around.

"Store hours closed anyway. You give any thought to dey charms?"

He rises and heads to the door to close the bolt. Not realtor a deturant if Sam wanted to bust out, buy should keep the mortals at bay.

"Still chewing on it. Mostly because I know little about voodoo"

"Hoodoo, actually. You call on dey loa not dey dead when protectin' folk."

"I do not know of any of this. Perhaps a lore swap will be in order?"

"Common view from white folk. Voodoo seen as all dey arts. Dey de dark ones. Deal wit de dead. Hurt, maim, decay, loss. Voodoo cover dat realm. Be dark an unforgiving. Hoodoo deal wit spirits... loa? Little gods. Charms to protect and shield others. Living powers, ya?"

"So if voodoo is dark, why does your shop advertise it ?"

Saturday grin in that knowing way.

"I never say I dun know voodoo. But, you dinnae ask to curse a foe. Ya asked to protect yerself. Besides, how many white folk gonna give money to hoodoo when I de dun know what dat is?"

"You have a point. So which did you use to contact the spirits?"

"Little a dis, little of dat." He says with a shrug. "Dey loa an de dead say same ting bout dat one."

He nodded "So what are these loa, the small gods? "

"Take all shapes an sizes, de loa. Some resemble men, some critters, some tings never flesh t'all. Like askin' what bout dem animals. Too many to know."

"What are they for, are they gods over certain things? Do they gain power as their worshippers increase ?"

"Sure. Gods have der domains. Dis loa guide de dead, dat loa bring good fishin', de utter loa bring de moon blood."

He shrugs a slender set of shoulders. "I dunno dey care all da much about worshipers. Power for dem comes from der domain."

Sam nodded "Most interesting. How does one learn about the loa, their domains?"

"Oh, Im sure de library got some ting on de loa. Never under estimate de library or de wisdom hidin' der."

He nodded "I will have to look into that."
